International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Cyprus. There may be some local population, but the schools are geared for an international student body. Schools usually follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, or France. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English or French with other secondary languages offered. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools often provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

There are a great number of educational institutions for foreigners in Cyprus, especially in Limassol. Secondary education has three stages: pre-school, primary and secondary.

  • Pre-school education is provided in a kindergarten that children can attend from the age of 3. Every child over the age of 4 must pass this program a year before school
  • Primary education in the Republic is compulsory for every child aged 6–12. During this stage, children receive basic knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic
  • Secondary education. High school education in Cyprus consists of two stages, each stage lasts three classes. Only the first three classes (gymnasium) are compulsory. After that, a student can optionally study for another three years (lyceum) and pass state exams. Based on the results of the exams students receive a general education certificate, which gives the right to enter the university.
